Confidence or Vanity?

Confidence ... one word that gets the attention of both men and women. While sitting and totally procrastinating browsing the net seeing what my favorite stylish celebs are up to I realized that the reason I don't post pictures of me too often on the blog is for a fear that since I am not a fashion blog, will I be considered vain? I know its totally my own little issue. But here's the question I have when does confidence turn into vanity. Just recently I was called vain because I was so caught up with the fact that I had a ugly breakout thanks to sunscreen usage(what face sunscreen do you use ladies?)! So I have to ask what do you consider the fine line between confidence and vanity?

  1. WOW. Deep for a Monday :)

I think it comes down to the person. I very seldom put up pictures of my face, I hate the way I look and I am always incredibly self-conscious of that image and start doubting myself.

There are a handful of people that I follow on blogs, Instagram, twitter who come across as vain because they are typical 'beauty' bloggers but in person are completely different...

  2. Did you see my sunscreen tip (beach beauty tips)? Apply sunscreen and then about halfway through the day, completely wash it off, dry, and then reapply. I swear it works.

I didn't post pics of myself for a year or so on my blog. I just don't think I look attractive. I've been often called that as a kid AND adult. But I'm slowly accepting myself and every time I post a "selfie" on IG, I see it as progress. It makes me nervous every time I do it.

I admit I know I have nice-looking hair, and I admit I'm confident in my beauty knowledge (which I think is mostly from being old, hehe), but idk if I'd consider that vain. Maybe I am and I can't see it.

  3. I don't really post pictures of myself on my blog but usually because I'm the one taking the photos and I haven't mastered taking self-portraits yet. I used to be really self-conscious and hated photos of myself but as I've gotten older (I'm 27 now)I realised something really important "it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks" and once I accepted that I really don't think twice about photos now.

    1. That's some brilliant advice, maybe I do care a bit to much about what people might think.

  4. Such an interesting question Meghan. I think there is a line between the two that can become blurry. When it comes to fashion posts it is easy to see who is bragging/vain. Fashion blog posts that are centred around the clothes the blogger is wearing or displaying is not vain. It becomes vain when the focus is off the clothes and the blogger just wants to show off how wonderful she is. There's a fine line, but the line is there. Don't know if you get me? You complaining about a skin problem is not vain. You have a genuine concern. It's when you have great skin and you complaining about it so that people can give you compliments on your great skin. That's vain! Haha:-)

I recommend Ultra Sun sunscreen or woolies sunscreens that are not to oily for the face.

  5. Vain is when you obsessively focus on or talk about something. To me you CARE about yourself, which MORE people should do. HaHaHa I can be very particular on the brink of vain when it comes to certain things. But I usually never impose this on others. It's just with me and my work. I like things just so. Great topic Meghan!

  6. Some people are confident and some are over-confident. Being confident is not a bad thing, being over confident and trying to put somebody down and make them feel useless is vanity.

This is your blog, you are the boss. Do things that makes you feel comfortable and stop worrying about others.

People will talk no matter what, you cannot stop them.

  8. Hi dear!

Look, thinking here, I think the two things go together.

When you are proud, therefore is a person who cares, want to be consistently good and beautiful and it makes you become more confident in yourself and your actions. I think there is ... Very nice post!

  9. I have the same issue! I feel as though if I post picture people will be like "why is she posting this?" because I am not 100% a fashion blog. But girl, I'd love to see pictures of you! You're gorgeous, love.

  10. this is such an interesting and "gets you thinking" post, i like it! i believe everyone should should have high confidence in themselves, and having that by being comfortable with themselves. you should also believe in yourself enough to not be concerned with the general public's view!

  12. Hey Meghan,

There really is a fine line between the two.
I'm one that does not have a lot of confidence but I also wouldn't consider myself vain. However I do post pictures from my life, past and present, on my blog because after all, the blog is about me and it's far from any kind of fashion blogs. There's no harm in putting up pictures of yourself when you feel like you look amazing or you want us to see into your life.
I haven't really come across any vain bloggers, more like bloggers who know who they are and what they want out of their blog.

    1. Yeah that's a very good point. If the blog is about you and your life it does seem relevant to add an image of yourself from time to time as with fashion or beauty blogs. I guess its a lack of confidence that has me not posting it to often.

  13. Great post and such an interesting topic for debate...Finding your voice is one of the toughest parts. There’s a fine line between confidence and vanity—and as people, we can tell the difference in a second. We know it’s a tricky balance to strike. On the one hand you have to sell yourself, and on the other, be genuine. But attention to a few details can make sure your personality presents you as someone talented and eager—not boastful and vain. Hope this helps! Much love :) xxx

  14. Hi dear, excellent topic, I also never post pictures of myself. I think the different between confidence and vanity is that confidence exudes a self assurance in a healthier way, where as vanity has a certain arrogance factor to it.

  15. I agree with so many of the comments above.
I have moments where I am more confident than others. But putting myself out there via my blog has me shy. I am also so nervous that people who know me in real life will read it and judge me. And I often don't post too much about my life in case strangers judge me.
I need a little confidence for my blog it seems!

  16. 1-Avéne is my choice because I have a sensitive skin :)and I use bare minerals make up products.
2- I am not a fashion blogger too. Also I don't have a body or face of a model but sharing your photos is a good way of communication with your readers, I believe. Start little by little.
Maybe with your accesories, shoes could be a good start, I believe that you will get so positive feed back...

  17. Well, I guess it depends on the context the photo is in. If you have a pic of yourself just for the sake of it, and it has nothing to do with the post. Then it might be a bit awkward. I started out cropping my head out of the photos I took for my blog, but then I realised that I'm already putting myself out there, what I look like shouldn't matter. If you want to post photos of yourself, then do. If not, don't. I wouldn't worry about it too much!

  18. Very interesting post. It took me ages to do outfit posts but there was a demand for it I decided to give it a go. I only do about one outfit post a week but even then it takes confidence to put it up and I think that helps define the line between vanity and confidence. Confidence is putting yourself out there and willing to accept critique from readers whereas vanity is thinking you are better then others and aren't able to handle constructive criticism.

I recently had a scary moment while in the UK a top photographer who has photographed goddesses like Nicole Scherzinger etc took an hour to look over my blog and critique it. I was a ball of nerves to say the least. Overall his opinion was positive but I will learn from what he said.

When I asked for his main tip for fashion bloggers in general it was be a blogger don't think you are a model. Even if you are a model by profession if you blog then use fashion blogger relateable poses not model poses.

    Fashion bloggers= Confidence
Model poses= Thinking you are better and something you are not

    1. This was food for thought. I would've been just as nervous, but you have a gorgeous blog and you are a natural when doing outfit posts. I think he is so correct about distinguishing the difference. I'm off to google more about blogger related poses. Thank you so much for sharing his advice.

  19. Interesting topic Meg! In fact one of the traits I wrote down for my one day future hubby is for him to be confident but not cocky. I think it comes down to vanity being more self obsessed as opposed to being comfortable with who you are because the latter is always attractive!
I use Xeroderm SPF its in a orange bottle from Dischem .. it worked wonders for my skin but I was told you have to check with your doctor if you want to use it because it is for super sensitve skin x
